From the moment they saunter on to the stage with an air of assured self-confidence, I get a feeling I’m going to like The LA Maybe. With their appearance, poise and attitude they ooze rock n roll from every pore before a single note is played. And when a note is played, they prove themselves to be damn fine musicians to boot!

The meaty powerhouse beats of opener ‘Mr Danger’ with its AC/DC inspired riffs, soaring guitar licks, gritty vocal and tight harmonies has the audience rocking from the outset and sets the scene for what is to come – an entertaining and vibrant set of ballsy full on party rock and roll! ‘Reckless’ ups the ante with its driving rhythms, breath-taking guitar solos and a truly impressive vocal range that is a cross between Axl Rose and Bon Scott with subtle hints of David Coverdale thrown in for good measure.

Two songs in and the audience is well and truly hooked – and the band knows it. There is plenty of rock posturing, swagger and a sense of fun as they work the audience like pros and their blistering covers of classic rock songs have audience singing along with gusto at the top of its collective voice. But, for me, it is the band’s original material that is the true strength of the set. The solo jams during ‘Take Me Away’ highlight the not inconsiderable musical talents of each band member and the slow burn blues infused ‘Peace of Mind’ shows the bands versatility whilst ‘When I’m Gone’, an emotional and poignant tribute to a friend who took his own life in 2015, is full of subtle nuances and maturity.

There will inevitably be comparisons to the likes of G ‘n’ R, Van Halen and Aerosmith but, in many ways, that does The LA Maybe a disservice because their music, though firmly rooted in the fine traditions of ‘70’s classic rock, retains an originality that is fresh and exciting. This brilliant set of catchy anthemic rock leaves the audience slightly out of breath, a little bit sweaty and completely exhilarated and, let’s face it, that’s what rock and roll is all about. If you get the chance to see this band live grab it with both hands. You will be very glad you did.
